UK Pet Services Coverage 2026: What PetCompare Hub's 4,909 Listings Show
This is an analysis of our own catalogue, not a survey of the UK pet-services market. On 18 August 2026 PetCompare Hub showed 4,909 public, searchable UK pet-service listings. This article looks at how those listings are distributed across service categories and city labels, what that distribution can reasonably be used for, and — because it matters just as much — where our coverage is thin or incomplete.

What this analysis is, and what it is not
A directory can describe itself in adjectives or it can publish its numbers. We would rather publish the numbers, including the unflattering ones, so that readers can judge how useful our coverage is likely to be for their own search.
So: this is a description of the PetCompare Hub catalogue on one specific day. It is not a census of UK pet businesses, a market-size estimate, a demand study, a quality ranking or a measure of provider density per head of population. Where one city label carries more listings than another, that means we hold more records with that label — nothing more. We have deliberately avoided phrasing such as "most pet businesses in X", because our data cannot support it.
The population being counted
All figures describe the same population: UK listings that were publicly searchable on PetCompare Hub on 18 August 2026. A listing qualifies only when its country is GB, its data status is active, and its listing quality is live_ready or fully_enriched. Records still in internal review, or only partially populated, exist in our catalogue without being shown publicly and are excluded here.
That population totalled 4,909 listings. The counts are complete counts of it — no sampling, weighting or estimation. Our data quality report sets out the same predicate, the same date and the same definitions.

Vets, pet shops and groomers are the three largest category groups in our current public catalogue. That describes how the catalogue is composed; it does not tell you which services owners need most or why those categories are better represented.
The taxonomy is not perfectly normalised. Smaller legacy and synonym labels exist alongside the categories above, so these are the main groupings rather than a closed classification. Treat the small counts with particular care: 11 listings in emergency vets plainly does not mean England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have eleven out-of-hours options between them. It means only eleven of our public records are currently categorised that way; it does not establish how many practices provide or arrange out-of-hours care.

A city label is simply the city value stored on a provider record. It is not a local-authority boundary, a postcode district or a catchment area, and no listing is assigned to a city by us on the basis of distance.
That has a visible effect on the table. Because grouping uses each provider record's stored city label rather than a standardised metro boundary, nearby businesses labelled with neighbouring towns fall outside that city's count. City-label totals are therefore unsuitable for comparing market size, service availability or demand between cities.
Reading the two distributions together
Comparing the two tables is useful as long as the comparison stays inside what counts can support.
- The largest pools. Vets and pet shops are the two largest category groups in the public catalogue, so those searches draw from larger catalogued pools than the small categories shown above. That does not guarantee completeness in any particular area.
- Where we are thinnest. Day care, training and pet sitting have the fewest records of the main categories. Owners looking for those services should expect our coverage to be partial and should not read a short result list as the full local picture.
- Where labels distort things. Any city-level comparison is a comparison of labels. Two cities of similar size can differ substantially in this table because of how surrounding towns are labelled.
What the tables cannot tell you: which providers are good, what they charge, whether they are currently accepting bookings, or whether they hold any particular licence, registration or accreditation. The completeness limits behind these counts
Any coverage analysis that only reports totals is flattering itself. The same 4,909 listings carry substantial gaps:

Each of these is a statement about our data, not about the business. A listing with no website recorded is a listing where we do not hold a website; it does not establish that the business has none. The same applies to phone numbers and to services: where we hold no structured services, the correct reading is "not listed", never "does not offer".
The coordinate gap has a direct effect on this analysis. 454 listings cannot contribute to distance filtering or map results, and 229 have no city label at all, so both the geographic table above and any radius search are working with less than the full catalogue. We withhold a location rather than guess one, which costs us coverage on purpose.
What we are doing about the gaps
The honest answer is incremental. Coverage improves when records are corroborated against a business's own official website, when owners claim listings and correct them, and when a category or city with thin coverage is worked through deliberately. Of the 4,909 public listings, 221 had their identity and contact details source-matched within the previous 90 days — a small proportion, and we report it as such rather than describing the catalogue as verified.
If you run a pet business and our record of you is wrong or missing, you can claim your listing or add your business, and anyone can flag a problem through our contact page. Corrections change these numbers, which is the point of publishing them.
Methodology
Every figure on this page was calculated directly from PetCompare Hub's production provider catalogue on 18 August 2026, using the predicate that governs public UK search: country GB, data status active, listing quality live_ready or fully_enriched. That population totalled 4,909 listings.
Category counts group that population by the primary service category stored on each listing; the taxonomy includes smaller legacy and synonym labels beyond the categories tabulated. City-label counts group the same population by the city value stored on each record, and the table shows the twenty most common labels. Missing-field counts are simple presence tests against the same population on the same date. No sampling, weighting or estimation was applied, and no figure here is modelled or projected.

A category shows very few listings — does that mean the service is rare?
No. A low category count means few of our public records are categorised that way. 3,257 public listings hold no structured services at all, so for many records the primary category is the only service signal we have. Absence of a service on a listing means it is not listed, not that the provider does not offer it.
How often will these figures change?
Figures will change as records are added, corrected, claimed or re-checked. Everything here is a snapshot for 18 August 2026. Future snapshots should only be compared when the same definitions and public predicate are used.
